I wanted to start a blog about all things percussion, both teaching and playing. I will also post just random thoughts about content I have viewed that I feel is relevant to what I do. I also want to talk about teaching in the current times (COVID-19 if you are reading this when I first post it).
Speaking of which, I just finished my first week of band camp with West Clermont. We had no issues social distancing or wearing masks. The kids even stepped farther away from each other when they needed to take their masks off to drink water, or to just pull it down for a second because of the heat.
I personally am pumped for whatever this season is going to look like. We layered exercises so every student could participate and feel successful in everything regardless of their previous experiences. I also didn't worry about quality as much and focused on teaching each student where they are currently at. This allowed us to places students on instruments that maybe they wouldn't normally play because of their current level. Every front ensemble member is on a keyboard learning scales, how to play 4 mallets, and accessory instruments because we can mount more stuff. Every battery member is on a flat drum (yes no bass drums this year) to develop hands. Plus they are all developing skills that will carry them into the concert season which is way more of the year than marching band is.
Yeah, I am bummed that we don't have marching band as normal. However, I am more excited because we can truly invest in the growth of the students and the experiences they have. I had a blast this week teaching, and the students said they learned a lot and had fun too. That is all I can ask for.
